At this moment FieldtypeGeocoder can only geocode the value of a field.
I have made a little companion module for the FieldtypeGeocoder, that makes it possible to geocode a string:

This module makes it possible to Geocode a string or coordinates using the same provider/configuration that the FieldtypeGeocoder module uses internally. It depends on FieldtypeGeocoder and re-uses its adapter/provider/geocoder setup.
This makes it possible to build a search functionality based on proximity.
I don't know of this functionality is out of scope for FieldtypeGeocoder, then a separate module is an elegant solution.
