Hi, first of all thank you for your all awesome work. I'd like to contribute these sprites I did with Aseprite, i.e. NO AI.

So I made my own take to 4 of these monsters, i.e. I only used the available palette and the original sprites as reference, and made the rest of their poses and design by myself

I also retained their original sprite/canvas size so they're consistent in dimensions compared to the original sprites. Their background is also the same from the original.

All artworks are indexed palette, but if you encounter some issues or if there are any changes needed, please let me know.

For attribution, my artworks are under the CC-BY 4.0 license.

those kinda have the spirit of original rtp assets!

Just a reminder, we have visuals for some critters in charset and faceset:

Thanks for the reminder! I was using the Monster sprites from OpenRTP-Checklist as references so I completely missed these spritesheets.

With that I'll use these as the reference, and I think I'll do the first 4 monsters instead (slime, demon, orc, ghost)

You were correct, all monsters from open rtp checklist needs a remake, but some of them have versions in charset and facesets. I commented about those to avoid having designs that differs too much from what we already have.

Thank you for your contribution!

Would you be okay with a CC-BY + OGA-BY dual licensing? We are currently moving to dual licensing due to us not reading the CC license properly (OGA-BY is basically CC-BY without a No-DRM clause, see the linked issue)

#51

The main risk is always that somebody could argue that they look like traces/repaints. (And color palettes are usually not copyrightable)

Imo the angel is far enough away from the original (one can see that this was the reference but using references is not forbidden).

And for the slime and the Demon their are no similaries at all (and you based it on our graphics, cool)

Only one thing about the angel: This is probably supposed to be some kind of clothing but to me it looks like that she exposes alot of skin at the marked location?

grafik

And could you make the transparent background colour the same pink as in the others?

Hi, thanks for checking out my work!

As for the licensing and after reading it, yes I'm okay with the dual licensing.

The angel were did inspired by the original so there are some parts that are similar like the palette and bits of anatomy, but as for the rest yes they are different and new.

Also about the angel, yes there was a lot of skin being shown because I couldn't make the color blend from her clothing pattern at the center work well, but I will adjust her sprite given the newer CharSet she has (e.g. hair, outfit, palette, etc.).

I'll also apply the same color background for future sprites.

If it's alright I'd like to get a feedback on the orc/pig monster sprite I'm working on--so you see on the FaceSet his bust portrait doesn't tell much about the clothing he's wearing, while on the CharSet he's clearly wearing an armor for battle.

607406056-ea82ce63-15ed-4d23-9868-b78d35517b3a 607405218-96776abe-5881-40b0-bfd5-0eee291126f5

And aside from the clothing, his skin tone is very different from one another. In case of the Slime and Demon there wasn't much difference to the hue of their color, so I just took the liberty of choosing what palette fits for a whole sprite, i.e. at the time from these 2 I chose to use their palette from FaceSet since they're easier for the eyes in terms of saturation (at hypothetical prolonged debugging session).

Right now the I'm using the palette from FaceSet too on the orc/pig monster, while as for his clothing design I used the CharSet as reference since it tells mostly everything visually to the player/dev.

What I'm trying to say is that there might be some very different aspects for some actors from CharSet and FaceSet, and I could be blending their features if that's alright.

orc_wip

For reference here's what I'm trying to design for the orc--the pinkish skin tone from FaceSet + golden armor from CharSet, and my own take, some addons, on the armor since the small sprite from CharSet could be very limiting to tell information.

So is it alright to add this piece on his armor which covers his mouth?

Because while the weapons and armor are a given to change in portrayal (i.e. no weapons in CharSets and FaceSets but we display them on Monster sprites) this 'piece on his armor which covers his mouth' could be contradicting to what the FaceSets tells us.

Overall, is it alright to take these kind of changes in the next sprites?

May need more opinions on this (not sure if we want a very specific way for RTP assets or not), but for me I think this works really well. 👍

Thank you for letting me know what you think of it.

I'll open this from draft then since I completed the 4 and made an update to the Angel sprite.

okay the new Angel version is a huge improvement.

I would kindly ask @jetrotal to give some feedback here (though hes quite busy right now) as hes the one with most artistic knowledge in our team 😅

My personal opinion (no offense): Except for the Orc I like them (that one looks a bit squished?). I'm indifferent about the redesign.

I only have to do some general checking, e.g. that they face in the correct direction (when compared to the original) as they are replacements so some basic things must be fulfilled). But mirroring something isn't a big deal.

hm... Yeah. They look good.
I share the same opinion about the orc...

We have a joke in between the japanese VIPRPG community and ours,
They get shocked about how comically handsome our characters are, compared to the rm2k3 ones.

The japanese artist that made our Orc, made it to look like a Mascot, like tiny and cute.

He made it inspired by an old anime called "super pig":

But I guess we can also keep your current design as an extra and call it "Orc_B" so we don't lose it.

Our Demon (named in 2k3 as Goblin/Imp) is like a stoic and silly uncle, inspired by Danny Devito.

He appeared in some games already and even received some fanarts:

That said, I like your demon design a lot and also would like to keep it as an extra design!

Our "Demon King" (Purple Guy in monsters faceset) was kinda inspired by Clive, from Final Fantasy 16:

Again, people started finding funny how some characters were handsome and we doubled down on it xD

btw your Arihman, Alligator and Anaconda, were mostly fine to be used.

The design should just change a bit to avoid copyright infrigiment (like colors, and such - maybe arihman is too similar?)

Your newer assets do a good job representing how we recreated some monsters charsets and facesets, and they escape from the og designs

Hahaha nice to know these facts, and yeah the characters ended up being mogging us with their looks. I was wondering for the inspirations too so these makes sense.

As for the pig I want it to be close on Demon's scale but ended up taking too much space vertically, and I don't want to use the same pose so there's that hahaha

And I see, so its the copyright issue of design regardless of the original work. I think I'll focus on what we currently have with CharSets and FaceSets then.

Anyways I very much appreciate all your feedbacks! I'll keep it on mind when making sprites. And thanks a lot for considering them adding as extra sprites too

the style choice comes from a famous artist called garakuta:
https://garakutamaker.blog.fc2.com/blog-category-17.html

He did a lot of assets for rm2k/2k3 and accepted helping easyrpg with facesets and some charsets too
His style is kinda of an improved version of 2k3's face. People also considered making a version closer to 2k (more chibi-like), so we can have both 2k and 2k3 equivalent assets.

the charsets were made by a bunch of artists, most of them were made by Victor Sena: https://victorsenart.carrd.co/
His asstes were also based on Garakuta choices.
