perf(launcher): skip and cache the redundant pi --version spawn - #2208

runtime.kind === "bundled" (both the adjacent peer resolved via resolveBundledCli() and the gentle-shell-managed install resolved via bundledPi()) already has its pi version in memory from a package.json already read into memory. Propagate it through PiRuntime.version so main() runs checkPiVersion(runtime.version) directly instead of spawning a whole extra process just to print it back. env and path runtimes have no such in-memory source and keep the real spawn (extracted into probePiVersion()), now also reused by the stat-based cache work tracked in issue-2096-launcher-version-probe.md. Fixes Gentleman-Programming#2096 for the bundled case (the default install path).
Pure, tolerant helpers in lib/gentle-shell-launcher.ts (cachedPiVersion, matchesFileIdentity, recordPiVersion) reuse the dev+ino+size+mtimeMs file-identity convention already used as a same-call TOCTOU check in lib/gentle-ai-binary.ts, repurposed here as a cross-run cache key. They extend RawLauncherConfig's existing "any other key a future feature adds" contract with a new piVersionProbeCache map, so the wiring in bin/gentle-shell.mjs (next commit) can read config.json's existing atomic read/write helpers instead of a new cache file. Not wired up yet: main() still always spawns for env/path runtimes. Part of Gentleman-Programming#2096.
Wires lib/gentle-shell-launcher.ts's stat-identity cache helpers into bin/gentle-shell.mjs's main(): for kind "env"/"path" (the only kinds still needing a real spawn, Gentleman-Programming#2096), stat the resolved runtime.command and reuse config.json's cached version on an exact dev+ino+size+mtimeMs match. Otherwise spawn as before and persist the fresh result. Best-effort throughout: a failed stat, a missing or malformed cache entry, or a lost concurrent write just falls back to (or repeats) the real spawn, never a wrong version — checkPiVersion still runs against whichever version string it ends up with either way, so a bad cache entry can only cost an extra spawn, never bypass the minimum-version gate. Verified manually end-to-end on Windows with a real .cmd-wrapped pi stand-in (the automated fixture's raw shebang .mjs hits a pre-existing, unrelated EFTYPE issue on this machine that also affects ~108 other tests in this file before this change): run 1 spawns and populates the cache, run 2 reuses it with zero spawns, and touching the binary's content re-probes on the next run. Fixes Gentleman-Programming#2096 for the env/PATH case.
An independent review of Gentleman-Programming#2096's env/PATH cache found two realistic blockers and two hardening gaps: - B1/B2: the cache write (writeRawConfig) was not wrapped in a try/catch despite the "best-effort" comment above it. A read-only or symlinked config.json (e.g. Nix home-manager), or a concurrent launch losing the atomic rename race on Windows, could turn an otherwise-successful launch into exit 1. Wrapping the write so any failure is swallowed makes the worst case what it was always supposed to be: one extra spawn next time, never a failed launch. Added regression tests for both: an unwritable config.json across repeated launches, and 8 concurrent first launches racing the same cache entry. - A1: a cached version string that doesn't parse as a version (e.g. a hand-edited "garbage") used to reach checkPiVersion() and fail the launch outright instead of being treated as the cache miss it should be. isCachedPiVersion() now requires VERSION_PATTERN.test() to pass, same tolerance bucket as any other malformed entry. - A5: an adjacent package.json with a non-string `version` (e.g. a hand-edited node_modules) crashed downstream with "output.trim is not a function" instead of resolveBundledCli()'s existing clean "Unsupported adjacent Pi package entry/name/bin metadata" error. Added the missing `typeof metadata.version === "string"` check next to the existing name/bin validation. A2 (identity-based trust), A3 (a malformed config.json gets replaced, same as the existing provisioned-marker pattern), and A4 (a broken bundled cli.js now surfaces at launch instead of at the version gate) are accepted as inherent to Gentleman-Programming#2096's design, not regressions. Found by an independent gentle-ai-verify pass; part of Gentleman-Programming#2096.

CodeRabbit's automated review of PR Gentleman-Programming#2208 found two real issues: - (Major) runtime.command often resolves to a .cmd/.bat wrapper on Windows: a fixed batch-script text file, not an OS-level indirection like a symlink. statSync on the wrapper alone never changes when only the script it wraps does, so the cache could keep reusing a stale version after the wrapped script changed underneath an unchanged wrapper, letting a downgrade below MIN_PI_VERSION slip past the gate until the wrapper itself was also touched. resolveVersionProbeIdentity() now parses a quoted .js/.mjs/.cjs path out of the wrapper's own text and folds its identity in too; when it can't find one (an unrecognized wrapper shape), it returns undefined so the caller never trusts or writes a cache entry for that path, falling back to a real spawn every time instead of a possibly stale hit. Added a Windows-only regression test that changes only the wrapped script, leaving the wrapper's own bytes untouched. - (Minor) isCachedPiVersion accepted any string merely containing a version-shaped substring (VERSION_PATTERN is intentionally unanchored, for tolerating a real --version probe's raw stdout). recordPiVersion only ever writes checkPiVersion's own already-clean "X.Y.Z" result, so the cache's own validation can afford to be stricter: a new anchored CANONICAL_VERSION_PATTERN now requires an exact match, rejecting garbage-with-a-version-inside the same way as any other malformed entry. Part of Gentleman-Programming#2096.

…_VERSION Rebasing onto main picked up MIN_PI_VERSION 1.2.0 (was 0.99.1 when the cache tests were written); their fake pi fixtures used 0.99.5/0.99.6, now below the minimum and failing the version gate they aren't testing. Bumped to 1.2.5/1.2.6, matching main's own existing fixtures in this same file (1.2.0/1.2.1). No production code change.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Keep the wrapped script’s full identity in the cache key.
If a .cmd wrapper is newer than its target, replacing the target with a same-size file whose timestamp is still older than the wrapper leaves this identity unchanged. Line 451 also discards the target’s device and inode. The cache can then reuse an obsolete version, including one that passes the minimum-version check after the target is downgraded. Compare both complete file identities instead of reducing them to a size sum and maximum timestamp. Add a test that replaces only the target while preserving its size and an older timestamp.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not fingerprint a different file from the command that runs.
If GENTLE_SHELL_PI=pi and the working directory contains a pi file that is not on PATH, statSync("pi") fingerprints that local file while the spawn runs PATH’s pi. Replacing the PATH executable can therefore leave a cache hit and reuse its old version. For a bare command name, resolve the executable through PATH before caching, or skip caching and probe on every launch.

Closes #2096
What
Removes the redundant
pi --versionspawn on everygentle-shelllaunch, following the comprehensive approach @carlosmoradev outlined in the issue thread.runtime.kind === "bundled"(both the adjacent peer resolved viaresolveBundledCli()and the gentle-shell-managed install resolved viabundledPi()) already has its version in memory from apackage.jsonalready read into memory.PiRuntime.versionnow carries it through, somain()runscheckPiVersion(runtime.version)directly — zero spawned processes.runtime.kind === "env"/"path"have no such in-memory source and still need a real spawn, but a real pi executable at a given path rarely changes. A new stat-identity cache (cachedPiVersion/matchesFileIdentity/recordPiVersioninlib/gentle-shell-launcher.ts, reusing thedev+ino+size+mtimeMsconvention already used as a same-call TOCTOU check inlib/gentle-ai-binary.ts) persists the probed version inconfig.json's existingRawLauncherConfigextension point, keyed by the resolved path's identity, and only re-probes when that identity changes.config.json, or a concurrent launch losing the atomic-rename race on Windows, could turn an otherwise-successful launch into exit 1) and two hardening gaps (an unparseable cached version string, a non-stringversionin an adjacentpackage.json). All four are fixed with regression tests.Full design log, specs, and task-by-task evidence:
