T-H2 — Point-to-point measurement in the viewer #324

Description

@lightningpixel

Epic: Epic H — Real-world scale & measurement tools
Priority: P2

Context

Lets a user verify a mesh's real-world dimensions directly in the viewer, once it's calibrated (T-H1).

Scope

  • Measurement tool: two clicks on the mesh (BVH raycast, already in place) → distance shown in real units if the scale is calibrated (T-H1), otherwise in mesh units.

Acceptance criteria

Clicking two points on a calibrated mesh shows the real distance in cm/mm.

Depends on: T-H1

    For a calibrated mesh, I would keep the displayed unit tied to the calibration state and make the uncalibrated case explicit as “mesh units.” For curved geometry, it also helps to distinguish the hit-point chord distance from an edge or feature length, otherwise users may read the result as a manufacturing dimension.

    A concise reference for STEP measurement terminology is the CADProps STEP measurement guide. Disclosure: I contribute to CADProps. It is a separate hosted tool that processes uploaded files on its servers, not a dependency of Modly.
