v0.22.0

slk v0.22.0

The headline: an Activity view that shows your mentions, thread replies, reactions and DMs in one place, threads you can actually read at any terminal width, and message forwarding with F. Plus slk now works on KDE Plasma, copy works in macOS Terminal.app, and a long list of fixes from seven contributors.

The Activity view (thanks @genki-miyachi)

slk now has the Activity tab from the official client. ◉ Activity sits in the sidebar just below Threads; open it from there, with Ctrl+a (which toggles back to your channel), or with :activity.

  • What's in it: @mentions (including @here/@channel, user groups and keywords), replies in threads you follow, reactions to your messages, and DMs.
  • Each item is a card saying who, what happened and where (Mention in #general, Reacted in DM, Thread in ◆ private) and how long ago, over the message itself, rendered like the message pane with emoji, mentions and channel links.
  • Enter takes you there: a thread reply opens in the thread panel; anything else jumps to the message in its channel.
  • u shows unread only. The filtering is done by Slack, not by slk, so it matches what the official client considers unread. The sidebar shows a badge with the unread count.

It shows the 50 most recent items. If you have more channels than you can keep up with, this is the view to live in. Closes #12.

This started as @genki-miyachi's PR #109, which carried the whole design. It was finished and brought up to date in #259, with their commits and authorship kept.

Threads are readable at any width

Until now, pressing Enter on a message at a common terminal width looked like it did nothing. With the default sidebar, a thread only opened at 124 columns and up, so the 120-column default couldn't open one at all. When it did open, it got 35% of the space, often too narrow to read.

Now a thread always gets at least 80 columns. When there isn't room for both the thread and the channel side by side (below 162 columns, or 130 with the sidebar hidden), they stack: only one is drawn, across the whole content area, and focus decides which.

  • Enter opens the thread in front.
  • Shift+Tab or h shows the channel with the thread still open; Tab brings the thread back.
  • Esc or q closes the thread, as before.
  • Resizing never loses anything: the layout is worked out again on each frame.

The thread header is now a breadcrumb that names where you are: # general › Thread from alice · 3 replies. Closes #223 and #244. Thanks to @mkozjak (#246) and @piotrsynowiec (#149), whose earlier fixes for this helped pin it down.

Forward messages with F (thanks @mkozjak)

Select a message or a thread reply and press F. You get the same fuzzy picker as Ctrl+t, limited to channels you've joined and your existing DMs and group DMs in the current workspace. Enter shares it; Esc cancels.

  • It forwards the way Slack does: slk posts the original message's permalink with unfurling on, so recipients see the message as a preview. Whether that preview shows, and who can open the original, is up to Slack's own permissions.
  • Enter on a forwarded message jumps to the original, including when the original is a thread reply.
  • Nothing moves under you: your current channel and your half-written draft stay exactly where they were.
  • It stays in the workspace you started in. Switching workspaces while a forward is in flight doesn't redirect it.

slk works on KDE Plasma (thanks @laraibg786)

On a KDE session, the Slack desktop app keeps its cookie-encryption key in KWallet. slk only knew how to ask the Secret Service, and on stock Plasma gnome-keyring often answers that request, finds nothing, and slk told you "no Slack entry found in your keyring", even though Slack was signed in and working. There was no way to add a workspace on that setup.

slk now reads both stores and tries each key it finds, so either one works with nothing to configure. When it can't get a key, it gives the most actionable reason first, so a locked wallet (a ten-second fix) isn't buried under a "not found" from the other store. Closes #234.

If you hit #213, where a key is found but the cookie still won't decrypt, please retry on this version and report back on that issue. It may be the same problem.

Copy works in macOS Terminal.app (thanks @mkozjak)
