SignedRequest carries field 5, attestation, documented as present only when the request comes from an enclave. Nothing sets it: the only signer fills the requestor id, signature, authenticated bytes and graph.

Fix

Remove the field and the unused generic.proto import. Reserve field number 5 and the name attestation so neither can be reused.

Nothing set or read field 5, and it sat outside the signed bytes.
Reserve the number and name. Regenerate gen/, which also picks up
the revision type change already on main.

official bufbuild/buf-action v1 default checks breaking change reserved deleted protobuf field FIELD_NO_DELETE

💡 Result:

**Yes—under the official `bufbuild/buf-action@v1` default workflow, deleting a protobuf field can fail the breaking check even if you reserve its number.**

The action’s README says its default behavior runs Buf’s `breaking` check. ([github.com](https://github.com/bufbuild/buf-action)) Buf’s current implementation shows `FIELD_NO_DELETE` is enabled for the `v1` default breaking category; the separate `FIELD_NO_DELETE_UNLESS_NUMBER_RESERVED` rule is not enabled by default. ([github.com](https://github.com/bufbuild/buf/blob/main/private/bufpkg/bufcheck/bufcheckserver/bufcheckserver.go?utm_source=openai))

Buf documents the “unless reserved” behavior as a distinct rule: it checks that a deleted field’s number is reserved. ([buf.build](https://buf.build/docs/breaking/rules/)) So reserving the number alone does **not** satisfy the default `FIELD_NO_DELETE` check. To allow reserved deletions, configure the breaking check to use `WIRE` or `WIRE_JSON` (which include the “unless number reserved” rule), or customize the rules.

**Version caveat:** the action’s `@v1` tag is a moving major-version reference, and the cited implementation is Buf’s current source—not necessarily the exact Buf CLI version used by every historical `@v1` run.

Resolve the Buf breaking-check failure before removing field 5.

.github/workflows/buf.yml runs bufbuild/buf-action@v1 for pull requests, and the action enables breaking checks by default. Buf's default FIELD_NO_DELETE rule treats removal of SignedRequest.attestation as breaking even when its number and name are reserved.

If this check is required, use the repository-approved policy for intentional breaking changes, such as a rule set that permits reserved field deletions. Otherwise, retain the field and deprecate it.
