Problem

ClickHouseRunsRepository.listRunIds dropped the wrong end of the result set when paging backward.

listRunRows fetches page.size + 1 rows to detect hasMore. That extra row is the one farthest from the cursor in both directions (forward orders created_at DESC, run_id DESC; backward orders ASC), so it's always the trailing element. Forward correctly used rows.slice(0, size), but backward+hasMore used:

rows.slice(1, options.page.size + 1)

— dropping the row closest to the cursor and keeping the has-more sentinel. The returned page straddled two logical pages: one run from the correct previous page plus one from the page before it. So paging "newer" (backward) across a page boundary repeated and skipped runs in the dashboard / runs.list.

This was pre-existing — it predates the composite-cursor work in #3852 and was spotted during it.

Fix

Both directions now slice rows.slice(0, size) (the sentinel is the trailing element either way). Forward pagination, the hasMore === false backward path, and all cursor values were already correct and are unchanged — only the backward+hasMore slice moves.

Tests

New runsRepositoryCursor.test.ts case: insert 5 runs (so a backward page has more rows before it → hasMore === true, the broken path), walk forward capturing every page, then walk backward from the last page and assert:

  • each backward page exactly reproduces the corresponding forward page (no straddling — fails on main with {b,c} instead of {c,d}), and
  • the full backward traversal covers every run exactly once.

The three existing cursor tests (forward completeness, backward round-trip, legacy cursor) still pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Backward pagination dropped the wrong end of the result set. listRunRows
fetches page.size + 1 rows to detect hasMore; that extra row is the one
farthest from the cursor in both directions (forward orders DESC,
backward orders ASC), so it is always the trailing element. Forward
correctly sliced rows[0..size); backward+hasMore sliced rows[1..size+1],
dropping the row closest to the cursor and keeping the has-more
sentinel. The result was a page that straddled two logical pages (one
run from the correct previous page plus one from the page before it) —
so paging "newer" across a boundary repeated and skipped runs.

Both directions now slice rows[0..size). Forward pagination, the
hasMore=false backward path, and all cursor values were already correct
and are unchanged.

Adds a regression test that walks forward across multiple pages, then
walks backward from the last page and asserts each backward page exactly
reproduces the corresponding forward page (and the full traversal covers
every run once).

Learning: In `apps/webapp/app/services/sessionsRepository/clickhouseSessionsRepository.server.ts`, the cursor predicate in `listSessionIds` compares only `session_id` while the `ORDER BY` clause uses `(created_at, session_id)`. This is intentional and consistent with the same pattern in `ClickHouseRunsRepository` and the waitpoints repository. Learning: In apps/webapp/app/services/runsRepository.server.ts, the in-memory status filtering after fetching runs from Prisma is intentionally used as a workaround for ClickHouse data delays. This approach is acceptable because the result set is limited to a maximum of 100 runs due to pagination, making the performance impact negligible.

Learning: In `triggerdotdev/trigger.dev` PR `#3368`, the `TaskIdentifier` table has a `@unique([runtimeEnvironmentId, slug])` DB constraint, guaranteeing one row per (environment, slug). In components like `apps/webapp/app/components/logs/LogsTaskFilter.tsx` and `apps/webapp/app/components/runs/v3/RunFilters.tsx`, using `key={item.slug}` for SelectItem list items is correct and unique. Do NOT flag `key={item.slug}` as potentially non-unique — the old duplicate-(slug, triggerSource) issue only existed with the legacy `DISTINCT` query, which this registry replaces.

Learning: In triggerdotdev/trigger.dev, the `GET /api/v1/sessions` route (`apps/webapp/app/routes/api.v1.sessions.ts`) has a known deferred security concern: when multiple `filter[taskIdentifier]` values are requested under a per-task-scoped JWT (`read:tasks:<id>`), `anyResource` OR semantics grant access but the repository then lists sessions for ALL requested task IDs, leaking data beyond the JWT's permitted scope. The fix (either a multi-task-filter → require `read:sessions` collection-scope guard at the `apiBuilder` level, or intersecting the filter with JWT-permitted task IDs before the repository call) requires surfacing permitted-task-IDs from `RbacAbility`, and is tracked for a separate PR as part of the broader `anyResource` semantics work.

Learning: In `apps/webapp/app/v3/services/resetIdempotencyKey.server.ts` (triggerdotdev/trigger.dev), a transient `buffer.resetIdempotency()` failure when `pgCount > 0` does NOT warrant a 503 and should return success. The mollifier `ack` and `fail` Lua scripts always DEL the idempotency lookup key as part of the run's natural lifecycle (drain→ack or terminal→fail or cancel-bifurcation), so stale buffered idempotency lookups converge automatically without caller retries. Only when `pgCount === 0 && bufferResetFailed` is a 503 appropriate, because then the run's existence is genuinely unobservable (the buffer outage hides a potentially matching buffered run). The test "returns success when PG cleared >=1 run, even if the buffer reset throws" documents this contract explicitly.

Learning: When handling Prisma error P1001 ("Can't reach database server") in TypeScript, don’t assume a single error shape. Prisma can surface P1001 via two different error classes/fields: `PrismaClientKnownRequestError` exposes it as `err.code === "P1001"` (common during mid-query connection drops), while `PrismaClientInitializationError` exposes it as `err.errorCode === "P1001"` (common on client startup failure). Therefore, predicates should use `err.code === "P1001" || err.errorCode === "P1001"`. Do not flag `err.code === "P1001"` as “unreachable/never matches,” as it is expected in production.

Specifically, it’s safe to import types using `import type { Foo } from "*.server"` or `import { type Foo } from "*.server"` because TypeScript erases type-only imports at compile time and they emit no JavaScript, so they won’t cross the Remix server/client bundle boundary.

Only raise the boundary concern for value imports (e.g., `import { Foo }` without `type`, or `import Foo`), since those produce JavaScript output.

Learning: In `apps/webapp/app/services/sessionsReplicationService.server.ts` and `apps/webapp/app/services/runsReplicationService.server.ts`, the `getKey` function in `ConcurrentFlushScheduler` uses `${item.event}_${item.session.id}` / `${item.event}_${item.run.id}` respectively. This pattern is intentionally kept identical across both replication services for consistency. Any change to the deduplication key shape (e.g., keying solely by session/run id) must be applied to both services together, never to one service in isolation. Tracking as a cross-service follow-up.

Learning: In `apps/webapp/app/services/taskIdentifierRegistry.server.ts`, the sequential upsert/updateMany/findMany writes in `syncTaskIdentifiers` are intentionally NOT wrapped in a Prisma transaction. This function runs only during deployment-change events (low-concurrency path), and any partial `isInLatestDeployment` state is acceptable because it self-corrects on the next deployment. Do not flag this as a missing-transaction/atomicity issue in future reviews.

Simulating controlled transient upload failures (e.g., fail N times then succeed) to verify `p-retry` behavior cannot be reproduced with real services or testcontainers. This file is an explicit exception to the repo's general no-mocks policy.

Learning: In the triggerdotdev/trigger.dev webapp test suite, it is acceptable to leave `createInMemoryTracing()` calls that register a global `NodeTracerProvider` without `afterEach`/`afterAll` teardown. Do not flag this as a test-ordering risk when the code follows the established pattern used across webapp tests (e.g., replication service/benchmark/backfiller tests). This is considered safe because `trace.getActiveSpan()` when called outside a `context.with(...)` block reads `AsyncLocalStorage.getStore()` (undefined when no `run()` scope exists), so it falls back to `ROOT_CONTEXT` with no attached span—regardless of which provider is registered.

Learning: In `internal-packages/run-engine/src/batch-queue/tests/index.test.ts`, test assertions for rate limiter stubs can use `toBeGreaterThanOrEqual` rather than exact equality (`toBe`) because the consumer loop may call the rate limiter during empty pops in addition to actual item processing, and this over-calling is acceptable in integration tests.

Learning: In `apps/webapp/app/services/runsReplicationService.server.ts`, the per-ClickHouse-group inserts inside `#flushBatch` are intentionally serialized (sequential) by default. Parallelizing group flushes causes Linux socket write-buffer pressure that required kernel tuning (`net.ipv4.tcp_wmem` set to `4096 20480 8388608`). Parallel flushing may be exposed as an opt-in via a `groupFlushStrategy` env var/option, but sequential must remain the safe default. Do not flag the sequential loop as a performance issue without acknowledging this constraint.

Learning: In the triggerdotdev/trigger.dev repo, the policy “Never mock anything — use testcontainers instead” should only be enforced for integration tests that interact with real external services (e.g., Redis, Postgres) via actual infrastructure. For unit tests that exercise pure in-memory logic (e.g., cache semantics) it is OK to stub collaborators such as `ApiClient` using Vitest (`vi.fn()`) to assert call counts or control behavior. Do not flag `vi.fn()`-based `ApiClient` stubs in unit tests as violations of the testcontainers policy.

Walkthrough

This PR fixes an off-by-one bug in keyset pagination within ClickHouseRunsRepository.listRunIds for backward traversal. The bug occurred because backward pagination used direction-dependent slicing logic that dropped the row nearest the cursor while keeping an extra sentinel row, causing pagination boundaries to misalign. The fix unifies slice logic across both forward and backward directions to consistently take the first page.size rows, accompanied by a regression test that validates backward pagination correctly traverses multi-page boundaries without row duplication or straddling, and documentation explaining the change.

🚩 Backward !hasMore edge case with partial pages produces null nextCursor

In the backward !hasMore branch (line 120), nextCursor = cursorFor(reversedRows.at(options.page.size - 1)). If the result has fewer rows than page.size (e.g., 1 row with page.size=2), reversedRows.at(1) is undefined → nextCursor becomes null. This means a user who backward-navigated to a partial first page cannot navigate forward from it. This is a pre-existing edge case (the cursor logic was not changed in this PR) and only affects degenerate scenarios where a backward navigation reaches the very first page with fewer items than page.size — in typical UI flows the forward pages were already visited so the user has other navigation paths.
