Changes in the v0.17 lifecycle

Added

  • Contour plotting using Makie.jl is now supported for PlotData2DCartesian data (#3238).
  • TimerOutputs.jl v1 is now supported in addition to v0.5 (#3172). When TimerOutputs.jl v1 is used, the new preference Trixi.set_timer_bars! toggles the bars visualizing the fraction of time and allocations spent in each section of the timer output of the SummaryCallback. The bars are disabled by default.
  • TreeMesh and UnstructuredMesh2D now support flux-differencing volume kernel with FDSBP operators for conservative hyperbolic systems (#3187).
  • The low-order FV scheme of VolumeIntegralSubcellLimiting can now be customized via volume_integral_low_order. It defaults to the first-order subcell finite volume scheme, while VolumeIntegralPureLGLFiniteVolumeO2 enables a second-order alternative (#3185).
  • PlotData2D now visualizes finite volume data on a TreeMesh (polydeg = 0 DGSEM, or BlockFV) as distinct cells instead of interpolating between neighboring cell values, for both Plots.jl and Makie.jl (#3150).
  • The GPU kernel of VolumeIntegralFluxDifferencing on P4estMesh{3}/T8codeMesh{3} can now be chosen via the new keyword argument flux_differencing_kernel of semidiscretize, either HalfSweep() (default), FullSweep(), or FullSweepGlobal (#3206).

  • The diffusive eigenvalue estimate (max_diffusivity) for the Navier-Stokes equations has changed (#3192). The new estimate for the heat conduction eigenvalue does not involve the term 1/(gamma - 1). Thus, the cfl_parabolic might need to be reduced by this factor, which is for gamma = 1.4 a reduction factor of 2.5.

  • The NonConservativeJump terms now require normal_direction_ll and normal_direction_rr as function arguments instead of the previous averaged normal_direction (#2890). This is necessary because the averaged normal_direction did not yield a consistent jump term.
  • Renamed the hyperbolic right-hand side function rhs! to rhs_hyperbolic! at the semidiscretization and solver levels for consistency with rhs_parabolic! (#2921). The internal default_rhs helper now rejects SemidiscretizationHyperbolicParabolic, which has separate hyperbolic and parabolic right-hand sides and thus lacks a single default right-hand side function.
