MarkEdit

MarkEdit is a free and open-source Markdown editor, for macOS. It's just like TextEdit on Mac but dedicated to Markdown.

Philosophy

MarkEdit is an opinionated app. Please read the Philosophy section to learn about the design and values behind it.

Why MarkEdit

There are already plenty of Markdown apps, so why make another one? Read Why MarkEdit to find out.

User Manual

MarkEdit is designed to be simple enough to use without instructions. However, we have put together a User Manual to help you discover useful features that may not be immediately obvious.

Development

Would you like to build and customize the app yourself? Check out Development.

Reporting Issues

Please use GitHub issues to report problems. Thanks in advance.

Please note that we are cautious about adding new features.

Privacy Policy

MarkEdit doesn't collect anything. For details, refer to Privacy Policy.

Plans for Older OSes

We don't have any concrete plans at this time. To stay focused, we support only the latest two major macOS releases. See #175 for details.

For the last compatible version for each older macOS release, see platform compatibility.

Plans for Other Platforms

We don't have any concrete plans at this time. Although most of the code works flawlessly on both macOS and iOS, we want to focus on Mac and provide the best possible experience there.

Plans for RTL

We know that CodeMirror (the underlying text editor component we use) supports RTL. However, we can only focus on languages we can read, and we currently don't have the capacity to test other languages.

Last But Not Least

MarkEdit is licensed under the MIT License to make life easier for everyone.

The code is free to use and modify as long as you provide proper credit. However, we would appreciate contributions back to the community. For example, releasing this app on the Mac App Store for $1.99 without adding any meaningful value would be inappropriate (see #790).

We reserve the right to adopt a stricter license if misuse occurs in the future.

We hope you find this project useful and find your inner peace.

Thank you.
